Sowing water: ecological restoration and nature-based solutions for the recovery and protection of an aquifer

Climate change seriously threatens the world's drinking water supplies. In the municipality of Apan, Hidalgo, there is an aquifer (APAN 1320) that has been historically overexploited for the industrial cultivation of barley, among other situations, and which supplies the community and neighboring towns with effort. Through ecological restoration practices, such as the implementation of nature-based solutions, aquifer recharge, as well as other ecosystem services, are encouraged for the benefit of all.

Toroto, as an implementing partner of the Firme Waters program -operated and funded by Grupo Modelo and the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ) GmbH- and with the help of the local owners of these lands, they have managed the regeneration of vegetation cover with native species -such as the maguey, culturally important but now almost extinct in the region-, they have implemented soil conservation and erosion prevention works and, through desazolve work, they have prevented existing bodies of water from being contaminated or dried, and therefore, that filtration into aquifers and the safe and constant supply of drinking water to the community are becoming less scarce.

In the following documentary you can see and hear more about the project, its people and the enormous work involved in taking care of our planet and our natural resources for the benefit of all.
